I whistled softly and long
You won’t come out
Shy and stubborn
Like a hermit crab
You bored me to death.
I was watching the sunset
You just came out
Tried to run away
Disguised on your back
I was excited.
I’ve grown wise
I seized the moment
I lost no time
I labored hard
Scribbling the words and verses.
You indulged me for a time
Then without saying goodbye
You crawled back into your shell
Like a bud dodging the light
Like a mimosa touched.
I’ve grown wiser
Learned how to wait
For the sunset
For the moment.
