THE EYES

In the dead of the night

She appeared in different forms

As a dog, a cat or a bat

But the eyes were the same

Staring, unblinking, unmoving

Striking unspeakable dread

Disengaging his muscles from his brain

As he cowered immobilized by fear

Wishing instant death

A thousand death is better than the horror

The shape-shifter’s eyes could bring,

As they bore through his bones

Creep on his skin

Burn into his soul

He pleaded for her forgiveness

For taking advantage of her youth and innocence

A married man seducing her student

In a little-known school

In a little-known place

He can’t endure the terror

Why won’t she suck out his breath

Drink his blood

Extinguish his life

Take his soul

He pleaded and begged

But the witch remained deaf and mute

Followed him to places he sought refuge

Continued to appear in the dead of the night.
